a tale of two hearts

band e for awesome

Last Sunday night after church you invited Band E back to our place for pizza (& some amazing salad) to celebrate being together one last time before Phil moves to Adelaide.
[I found this so amusing - Bec getting a 'rock' education' from the old farts in the room]
[Above: What catering looks like when I'm left in charge...it's efficient I like to think]
[Bec's awesome farewell gift for Phil...man that girl is talented with a pen. I'm seriously considering asking her to do a portrait of you for your birthday next year :P]
[Our brilliant idea to replicate Bec's drawing and by 'our' I mean Bec and I. Clearly Joel wasn't as enthusiastic about the idea!]
Phil - we love you lots...our loss is 'Rad'elaide's gain!!

Happy Birthday Keith!!!
...and thank you Amy for organising such a beautiful afternoon :)

time to fess up

To my lovely friends who read this blog. This post is for you.

[Paris, Versailles 2011]

I am drawn to authentic people. To those that don't pretend that there is no muck or mire, but choose to trudge through it and come out the other side. I hope to be that kind of person. I don't have time to pretend I've got it all together, nor would I want to. Life has taught me that there is beauty in imperfection.

With that said I think it's important that I'm honest with you. I've been struggling with this blog a little in recent weeks. So I figure I should just tell you, get it off my chest and move on.

(deep breath here goes)

When you're reading this blog if you ever feel like J and I have it all together...I'm sorry to disappoint you but you're wrong. I'm a pretty private person and protective of the personal details of our life - I share snippets of our joys here but never the hard stuff. Maybe in time I'll share that stuff here too...maybe I won't, I don't know and I don't need to know right now. I do know this - this blog as it currently stands helps me cherish and celebrate the beautiful things in our life and right now I need that.

So please see it as that - a lop sided representation of our life.

Come back and flick through posts if you're encouraged but please keep in mind that for now I won't be sharing the stuff of life that makes the images you see here so precious to us.

Now that's out of the way - I want to say a huge thank you for your lovely emails/facebook messages about how much you enjoy the blog. J and I get such a buzz flicking through it, it's such a thrill to hear you do to!

ny from up high

I think this was day 6 or 7 into the trip.

I slowly woke up and tried to remember if we had anything pre-planned for that day and then it hit me...

"We're going on a helicopter ride... over NY!!!"

It's not everyday you get to wake up with that on your to do list!

Absolutely incredible.

My poor cheeks... yep that's one happy girl!

looking at you

Seriously, just look at you - no wonder that I can't keep my hands off you!

[Brooklyn Bridge, NY 2013]

Guess what - only one more sleep and I get a 4 day weekend with you!

making stress your friend

I watched a few Ted videos tonight while you were at cricket.

You should watch this one...so fascinating!

Turns out it's all about perspective.

A few quotes.

"The harmful effects of stress are not inevitable how you think and how you act can transform your experience of stress. When you choose to view your stress response as helpful you create the biology of courage and when you choose to connect with others under stress you can create resilience"

"Stress gives access to our hearts, the compassionate heart that finds joy and meaning in connecting with others"

And here is my favourite!

"Go after what creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows"

truly yourself

I came across this quote months ago while procrastinating for a uni assignment.

[Image: Jo at Caitlin's Wedding 2010]

I've always been frustrated when I hear a friends make a comment about how much they dislike this or that about the way the look...it hurts my heart to think they can't see what I see. I just shake my head in disbelief wondering how could they possibly be so blind.

And yet...

I hold the exact same insecurities about myself. About the ever growing wrinkles around my eyes, about the dimples on my thighs, about the little spots on my back, about the new grey hairs.

Something clicked when I read that quote - I think I finally got a glimpse into what you and mum have been trying to tell me all these years!

the subway

I know lots of people aren't fans of the NY subway but we were!
(except for the whole 'communal sauna' feeling in summer...yeah that part I could do without)

230 fifth

Remember this night...I don't think we'll ever forget it.
